The toss of turbulent waves, the sea spray in your eyes, the leaps and jolts of fish broaching the surface of the water, and finally, the strain of your muscles and the sweat on your forehead as you reel a big nasty fish with really sharp teeth into your boat – some weighing more than you do. That, my friends, is the thrill of it all.
This kind of action demands equipment that is up to the task. What better place to put your tools to the test than the tropical, fish-rich waters off the coast of Costa Rica?
In episode three, season four of The Delivery, a video series in which pro anglers and guides from around the world find success fishing with the same Rapala lure, anglers and outdoor enthusiasts Kipp and Captain Cholo are delivered an X-Rap® Magnum Xplode®, which they promptly take out for a spin (or a few, more like) along the cobalt waters of Playa Zancudo, Costa Rica.
The beach is home to The Zancudo Lodge, a world-renowned site for prime inshore and offshore sport fishing. Absolutely packed to the brim with yellowfin tuna, mahi, marlin, Pacific sailfish, roosterfish, cubera snapper, wahoo and more, it is no surprise that more than 70 International Game Fish Association (IGFA) records have been set in this location.
Once out on the water, it didn’t take long for these anglers to have their adrenaline piqued. The sheer sight of the Xplode lure piercing the surface and throwing sheer white roostertails against the deep green rainforest background alone was enough to put a smile on the faces of these experts.
“[The lure created] big action on top of the water…you could hear it from probably 100 yards away creating that noise and creating that huge spray,” said Kipp.
But then…the real fun began.
“All of a sudden the roosters showed up and it was showtime,” said Kipp. “It was fun watching the combs come up over the water right behind the popper swiping back and forth. At one point, there was four fish following one popper.”
The X-Rap® Magnum Xplode was designed with a thick-walled ABS body, through wire construction and extreme-duty VMC hooks to withstand and conquer the most vicious of strikes. This topwater lure features a custom, low-position line tie that pulls the lure downward when retrieved while the deep-cupped face creates a monumental surface explosion with each sweep.
